Another Juno awards just goes to show how awesome Canada is!

Vocab had so much fun attending the awards show on Sunday March 15th with our client and Juno winner, Manic Drive. Just like previous winners in the same category, (Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album of the Year), they are so grateful to be Canadian and overwhelmed with the amount of love and support they received from the Junos and from their fans. Congrats guys!

The night was filled with memorable performances including the energetic opening from Hedley, the 80′s groove from Breakthrough Artist winner, Keisza, and the small town band mates turned rock stars – The Arkells (who also took home a Juno for Best Rock Album of the Year).

Oh, and Alanis Morissette was there to remind us she still knows exactly how to steal a show! – Canada’s favorite hippy princess sang a powerful medley of her best hits… Uninvited, You Oughta Know, and Thank You. She was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and gave a moving speech focusing her gratitude on this great country, and her experience of “being famous” … saying:

“I took advantage of the cloth from which I was cut and continued to tell stories and feel so touched by how people interpret my songs.”

The musical build up throughout the night was intense – good vibes were definitely spread across First Ontario Centre in Hamilton, and everyone was excited to find out who would be named Artist of the Year.

Annnnnd the Juno goes to…. THE WEEKEND! His hair may be crazy, but his smile is contagious and his speech was adorable:

“Um, I’d like to thank the Junos of course,” he said, checking the mic to make sure it was on. “I want to thank Canada man, thank you guys. I wouldn’t be here without you. Thank you."

Here are some awesome moments in photographs:

Until next year, Junos!

Comedian Trixx Grabs the Cover of NOW Magazine

When I sit down with Frankie “Trixx” Agyemang and tell him I’m happy he’s finally on NOW’s cover, he’s modest at first, saying he’s amped and honoured. Then his eyes light up.

“This should make some comedians happy,” he says, smiling mischievously. “Can’t wait for the Facebook messages afterwards.”

Boom. In less than a minute he’s revealed the kind of brass-balls honesty that makes his stand-up act so funny. This is Trixx the fearless truth-teller, the comic who doesn’t like performing at certain open mics frequented only by other comics who never laugh.

Why not? I ask. Are they bitter?

“Comedians bitter?” he says, his face deadpan. “Never.”

Okay, the guy’s got attitude. It’s there in the snarl or cocky look he sometimes adopts in publicity photos. You can also see it when he crosses a stage to begin his act, even before he picks up the mic, scanning the audience for any sign of dissent. Read More.
