The highly anticipated Academy Awards aired last night and it was a night to remember. With it’s recent backlash of #OscarsSoWhite the world was waiting and watching to see what Chris Rock would say to address the important issue of the award show’s lack of diversity with the nominees.
Rock did not disappoint with a racially charged nine minute monologue touching on the celebrities that boycotted the event, calling the Oscars “The White People’s Choice Awards” and he even brought to light the violent history black people have endured.
But beyond the elephant in the room that night there were many winners for the 2015 movie season. Spotlight, The true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, took home Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Alejandro González Iñárritu won for Best Director for The Revenant. Alicia Vikander and Mark Rylance won for Best Supporting Actress and Actor for their movies, The Danish Girl and Bridge of Spies. Newcomer Brie Larson won Best Actress for her formidable role in Room and Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his Best Actor award after five previous nominations, for his arduous role in The Revenant.
